An occasional post from The Markdown Handbook.

Among today’s links are markdown editors Mark Us Down, Nimbalyst, Sveltemark, Markoun and ReText. Plus there’s static site generator Zensical and a nifty little macOS utility called Markset.

  • Mark Us Down is a free, split-pane markdown editor built with Tauri and React. There’s no control over type size, font and editor width (unless you resize the window and don’t want to work in full screen).
  • Markset does one thing, and does it well. It is a free macOS utility that first renders .md files in Finder’s QuickLook preview and then allows you to export them as typeset PDFs from the right-click menu. Simple as that. There’s no need to go dusting off your markdown editor, just click on any markdown files and hit the spacebar.
  • Nimbalyst is free for individual users, but you have to upgrade to teams to collaborate and add premium features. This is not a writer’s tool by any means. I can’t work out how to display text at a comfortable width for writing; the default is full paragraph width? There are no obvious editor controls, only a lot of settings aimed at introducing AI into your workflow. The developer says: “Nimbalyst is [a] visual workspace for building with Codex and Claude Code. It’s a session manager and visual editor for markdown, mockups, drawings, sessions, and tasks – plus code, data models, and CSVs.” That’s not for me. Available for macOS Silicon/Intel, Windows and Linux.
  • Zensical is a static site generator built by the creators of Material for MkDocs. Write your documentation in markdown and create a professional static site for your open-source or commercial project in a couple of minutes. Zensical provides you with a site that is searchable, customisable and available in more than 60 languages.
  • SvelteMark is a browser-based, privacy-first, open-source markdown editor built with Svelte 5. Install with pnpm, npm or yarn. Your notes never leave your device. There are no accounts and no tracking.
  • Markoun is a lightweight, self-hosted, file-based markdown editor designed for users who prioritise privacy and simplicity. Its file-based architecture works directly on local files, so there’s no database, no indexing and it is fully portable. Requires Docker.
  • ReText is a simple but powerful editor for mark-up languages. It supports markdown, reStructuredText, Textile and AsciiDoc. There’s also scope to add custom mark-ups. Installation requires Python.
