Inkwell ‘C’ updates to 0.7.8

Inkwell, the free and open-source markdown editor, has released a major update (0.7.8). I have tagged this app ‘InkwellC’ because of confusion with another app called ‘Inkwell’ mentioned at the bottom of this post.

Updates to InkwellC include:

• LaTeX math: Inline $ … $, display $$ … $$ and fenced math blocks rendered live with KaTeX in the editor and preview — and carried into HTML and PDF exports.
• Markdown mode: A per-note toggle splits any note into raw markdown and a live, scroll-synced preview. Drag the divider to rebalance the panes, or switch back to the distraction-free editor.
• Vim mode: Turn on Vim keybindings in Settings > Editor – modal editing, motions and : commands, with a status line under the editor.
• Themes: Two Notion-inspired grayscale themes — Graphite in light, Onyx in dark — bringing the built-in theme count to 10.
• Create a folder anywhere: The New Folder dialog now lets you choose the parent folder — or drop it at the library root — instead of only nesting under the current one.
• Sharper drag and drop: Reorder, nest and un-nest notes and folders with a drop indicator that follows the cursor. Moving a folder relocates its whole subtree on disk.

A quick note about fonts. They don’t seem to work when applied to the preview. Same goes for changing the font size in settings. It applies the size change to the settings window, but not the editor.

Don’t be confused, as I was, with Inkwell by developer 4 Worlds, first reviewed in Markdown Link no. 34. Inkwell 4 Worlds is a free but closed-source app, with a ‘Pro’ upgrade that allows export. I have tagged this Inkwell4w for future reference.
